What past participants have to say:

Roberto Montenegro, M.D., Ph.D

Founder, Montenegro & Associates Behavioral Health

Doctoring Differently coaching opened my eyes to the world beyond full-time clinical medicine. Dr. Lawrence-Reid supported my desire to depart from the outdated career expectations central to academic medicine. She helped me avoid the pitfalls of self-doubt and insecurity that often limit us as Physicians attempting to embark on new ventures. Bringing this approach to my work as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, I began this new chapter of my professional journey with a higher salary and fewer hours, all while putting myself and my family first.

Andrea Austin, M.D.

Emergency Medicine Physician

Dr. Naomi Lawrence-Reid helped me discover my values and priorities. She empowered me to realize my full potential and reach for opportunities that fulfilled both my professional and personal goals. Now, I have better hours, more autonomy, and higher pay. I am more optimistic about my future than ever before. I also have more energy and creativity to devote to the advocacy work that really provides joy to my life. As my parents are aging, I also have the flexibility to be able to go home more often and be available to my family.

Connie Orem Gomez, M.D.

Family Medicine

“Dr. Naomi Lawrence-Reid helped me realize my potential and gave me the courage I needed to reclaim my agency and put myself and my family first. This seemed like an impossible dream after being stuck in the same unsatisfying job for over a decade. After increasing responsibilities were added to my workload without appropriate compensation, my burnout became nearly unbearable. In taking the Doctoring Differently course, I learned everything I needed to pivot out of full-time clinical medicine. I am now free to work on my schedule and do what I really enjoy. I never thought it would be possible, but I have become my own boss and I am the only one in charge of me. I cannot thank Dr. Naomi enough for giving me my life back. In my first month away from full-time clinical medicine, I made over $50,000-- twice my previous monthly salary. If you are a Doctor feeling like there is no way out, I was there. Take the Doctoring Differently course. It will change your life for the better.”

Lara Jones, M.D.

Pediatric Critical Care

“I feel extremely fortunate to have found Dr. Naomi Lawrence-Reid and whole-heartedly recommend her course without any reservation whatsoever to any physician who wants to get more out of their career. Dr. Naomi gave me the practical knowledge, support, and resources I needed to recalibrate my professional goals to serve me and my family when our personal needs changed. She exposed me to the breadth of possibilities that exist outside of the ‘traditional’ path of medicine, and instilled me with the confidence I needed to explore my options and allow myself to cultivate the life I’ve worked so hard for. Her energy is palpable, and her course goes beyond coaching – the materials are immediately implementable and full of practical ways to make changes now. I am already pursuing several opportunities that will give me the financial freedom and autonomy that I need. I am excited and finally optimistic about my future as I start this next chapter of my career.”

I am a Physician and I am scared to try something new and different.

We Physicians are not given permission to try new career paths or explore the creative aspects of our personalities. We are trained that there is one way to be a Doctor—the full-time clinical, research, or academic way. We are here to tell you that there are no rules. You are allowed to explore the full scope of opportunities that your medical degree and license will allow. Doctoring Differently was created to teach you about the vast world of opportunities that are available to Physicians from all specialties. You have permission to create the career that you deserve and Doctoring Differently can help you get there.

Am I failing if I quit my job as a Physician?

You are not. Quitting is not failing. Quitting is bravery and boundaries in action.

Will I need my own malpractice insurance to Doctor Differently?

You likely will not need your own malpractice policy to start, but you may eventually need to carry your own insurance if you decide to pursue aesthetics or another independent venture. The Doctoring Differently Course will show you what type of policies you may need and cost-effective strategies on how to obtain them.

I need health and retirement benefits for myself and my family. Is it possible to obtain those outside of a full-time contract?

Yes! It is possible to obtain health and retirement benefits independently of a full-time employer. Doctoring Differently course will teach you about your options in securing these benefits. Join us to learn more!

I have student loan debt. How could I possibly work outside of a full-time clinical contract?

In the first Doctoring Differently lesson, you will learn to set a minimum goal income now so that you are able to transition out of full-time clinical medicine while continuing to make loan payments and afford your living expenses. The opportunities presented in the Doctoring Differently course have tremendously high earning potential and some of the opportunities presented (e.g. Pharmaceuticals) do offer loan repayment options.

I am a surgeon. Can I Doctor Differently?

Yes. All Physicians can Doctor Differently.

I am not sure if Doctoring Differently will work in my specialty. How do I know for sure?

When Dr. Naomi began Doctoring Differently, she often reminded myself “You were a Doctor before you were a pediatrician”. Our hard-earned critical thinking skills often transcend our individual specialties. We have been conditioned that clinical medicine is our only career option when, as Physicians, we have the single most valuable degrees and skillsets in the world. Those skills are transferable across many disciplines and types of work.

I am an international Physician working outside of the United States. Will Doctoring Differently work for me?

Many of the lessons taught in the Doctoring Differently course are applicable to Physicians around the world. You are welcome to join Doctoring Differently course.

I am an international medical graduate who is ECFMG-certified. Can I Doctor Differently?

I have finished residency, but I have not yet passed my board exams. What are my options?

I am considering a fellowship program. Can I Doctor Differently while I complete fellowship?

Obtaining an unrestricted U.S. state medical license after passing USMLE Step 3 gives you many options for non-clinical opportunities. Additionally, if you are board-certified in your general field of practice, clinical opportunities like moonlighting and locums may be available for you. Doctoring Differently can show you how to start! A Little More Advice: Doing a(nother) fellowship will not make you happier. Do a fellowship because you are passionate about the subject. Do not do a fellowship because you believe that it will make you more valuable to an institution or because you imagine that life as a specialist will be better than that of a generalist.

I will finish residency within the next 12 months and I am not sure if I want a full-time clinical job. Do I have other options?

Yes! You have many clinical and non-clinical options as a new residency graduate. We at Doctoring Differently believe that most new graduates should work clinically in some capacity—either on a part-time or per-diem basis. The Doctoring Differently course is an excellent resource to teach you about the many lucrative and flexible career options you were likely not taught in residency. A Little Advice: Whether you decide to sign a full-time clinical contract or not, please do not imagine your first job as your forever job. Your first full-time attending job should be a casual dating relationship, not a marriage. Pay attention to what you like and what you do not like, but do not fully commit yourself to that job long-term unless your employer has consistently proven that they value your time, effort, and labor. Show up, work hard, and in 2-3 years, reassess. At that point, it might be time to move on (and Doctoring Differently will be here to help you when you are ready).

I am a resident, but I am struggling (mentally, emotionally, or financially). What job options do I have as a trainee right now?

Residency is hard. There is no sugarcoating it. Our residency system is long overdue for comprehensive reform that includes workplace protection, mental health support, and fair wages for all trainees. While we understand wanting (and needing) to earn more money to supplement your resident wages, those precious few hours that are not spent on-call, post-call, or fulfilling clinical duties, should be spent sleeping, eating, or doing something that makes your feel good about yourself. However, If you have passed the USMLE Step 3 exam, you are eligible to apply for a U.S. state medical license. That license gives you access to a number of clinical and non-clinical Physician opportunities that are discussed in detail within the Doctoring Differently course. You are welcome to join us!

I am a nurse practitioner or physician assistant/associate. Can Doctoring Differently work for me?

The Doctoring Differently platform and curriculum was created exclusively for Physicians (MD, DO, MBBS, or equivalent). For other resources, consider exploring nursepreneur.com.

I have graduated from medical school, but I have not matched into a residency program. What are my options?

The infuriating truth is that revenue motivated increases in medical school class sizes have not been matched by a proportionate increase in residency program sizes thus creating an epidemic of qualified, unmatched medical students. Many of the opportunities presented on the Doctoring Differently platform require an unrestricted U.S. state medical license which requires completion of an intern year and passage of USMLE Step 3 exam. If you are one of the thousands of qualified, unmatched medical students, you are welcome to take the Doctoring Differently course as much of the curriculum will help you think about your next steps once you are able to secure an unrestricted U.S. state medical license. I am a medical student and I am not sure if a career in medicine is for me…

Medical school is one of the most difficult times in our lives, but it does not last forever. If you are having difficulty envisioning a life as a Physician, be transparent with your Dean and the administrators at your medical school and consider taking a semester or a year off. Speak to a therapist and take the time to think carefully about what you want in life. You deserve to follow your individual passions in this life—inside or outside of a career in medicine.
